California Grill Scheduled for Refurbishment

Chef Brian at the Helm

If there’s one place that I love to splurge for when on my Disney vacation, it has got to be a fantastic meal at the California Grill. It doesn’t matter if you want a high end steakhouse meal, sushi, or a simple flatbread, this Disney Signature Dining establishment and it’s team of culinary masters has something that will tickle your taste buds and make you smile.

In February my companions and I made advanced dining reservation for the Grill just about an hour before it was time for the fireworks. Many people want to eat here for the window view, but my delight was being set at the perfect table to watch the chefs working in the spectacular show kitchen. With Executive Chef Brian Piasecki running the expedite station, it was a truly extraordinary show. We started with cocktails, and I had a wonderful ‘French Martini’. It’s a cocktail I had always admired when eating there, but had previously passed by in favor of the award winning wine list. I will not be passing it up again. To eat I started with some delicious custom sushi, followed with the phenomenal pulled pork flatbread that was upbeat and modern, then finished with raspberry cheesecake. I simply don’t have bad thing to say about any of it. Magnificent is the only word that I can use to describe one of the best meals I’ve had. It’s no real surprise to me that it happened at the California Grill.

One of the most interesting things that happened while I was there though was the confirmation of a rumor. There are changes in the works for this classic Disney venue and I can’t wait to see what the results will be. Our server told us that the California Grill is scheduled for temporary closure starting January 1st, 2013 and lasting a period of 4-6 months. Though there have been rumors that roof work is being done, she said that they are closing so that this popular restaurant can get a facelift. Still in Blue Sky she didn’t have many details about what will be happening but she said that the rehab will be so expensive they may even be “moving” the elevators by opening up the old bank from the 1970s.

Make sure to get to the California Grill this year on your Disney vacation so that you can get your last look at the current décor, and while you’re there, be sure to have a fantastic meal and tell Chef Brian hello!
